Taiwan's vice president-elect has offered China help in fighting a new outbreak of the coronavirus, even as authorities on the island tighten restrictions on visitors from China to prevent its spread. Citing an earlier government statement, local state media reported that cars, ships and people will not be banned from entering the country, but that efforts to combat the disease, such as disinfection efforts, will be stepped up.

Shekou Port will only be open to foreigners who hold a 5-day passport valid for travel within the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, and to travelers to and from Guangdong Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guangzhou Province for a valid 5-day stay.

Getting there: If you want to travel by express train between Hong Kong, Shantou and Chaozhou, you can use the Chaoshan train station, which has 7 trains a day connecting to Hong Kong and ShantOU and then on to Guangzhou. The most convenient way is the Light Rail (CRH China) and the journey to Shenzhen takes 45 minutes, but others (Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiuzhou) arrive at the check-in desk 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. You can also take a bus or taxi from the train station to the airport or take one of the many bus lines in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. From Guangdong Province, it takes about an hour and ten minutes to get to Chao Zhiyuan Airport and from there to Shekou Port in the Special Economic Zone.

Option 2 is to travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen North to Shantou City Centre via a transfer. In addition to the ferries, there is also a ferry from Guangdong to Guangzhou, from where you can go to Wuhan or Chongqing, or from there to Portas do Cerco and the port of Gongbei, which can be used to cross the border between Macau and China. One of the fastest growing ports in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is S'Zhongshan North Station, which is surrounded by many local buses, including buses from Zhuhai, Jiuzhou, Dongguan, Zhejiang, Zhongsha, Guang Dao and Zhaotong, which travel to and from the district. Option 3: If you travel to the city centres from ShantOU by train, bus or ferry, either to or on the way to Hong Kong, then Option 2.

Chaoshan Station is the best choice if you are travelling from Shantou to Hong Kong, but the timing is not good. There is no direct bus service from Chaoshansan to Guangdong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen or Shanghai. ShantOU is quick to get to from Hong Kong, but not cheaper than by plane, and you can also get there from the city centre by train or bus.

There are five major airports near Zhongshan, all within a 90 km radius.
